Now that the holidays are officially over, I’d like to take some time to reflect on 2016 and make note of what I’d like to accomplish in the new year. The days surrounding New Year’s have always brought me an intentional, renewing energy. I’m not ashamed to admit that New Year’s Resolutions always have been and probably always will be a part of my life. While I’ve learned to let go out excessive planning and trying to control every outcome, I am still, by nature, a list-maker and a goal-setter. Every year I like to set goals and intentions for different categories of my life- like career, money, travel, health, etc.
Here is a breakdown of some of my intentions and resolutions for the new year.
My main pledge for the new year, in terms of sustainable living, is to stop buying food and other products that come packaged in plastic (especially non-recyclable plastic). Plastic is a massive, seemingly-unavoidable problem, and I like to think of it as the cancer of the Earth. While it’s a problem that doesn’t seem to be going away, I’m going to start taking more personal responsibility.
I am also setting a goal not to buy anything new, with the exception of things like socks, underwear, and other necessities. If I feel like I really “need” something, I will buy it from my list of approved brands/ retailers.
I aim to eat a simpler, more local, and more seasonal diet, and move my body more intuitively this year. The older I get, the clearer it becomes that I cannot be bothered with diet fads/rules/dogmas and regimented exercise routines. This year will be about more fresh, easy-to-prepare foods. More yoga/ running/ walking/ hiking/ doing things that are fun.
Meditation and a regular yoga practice are a couple things that I aim to bring into my daily life. I plan to use YouTube and YogaGlo while on-the-go, and take the occasional yoga class at a studio.
In 2016, I finally got into the habit of setting and sticking to a budget and monitoring my spending. In 2017 I intend to keep this habit up, build my savings, and start putting my money where my mouth is by investing in green companies.
Working smarter and not harder at my “day job” (as a flight attendant) to free up my time for working on this blog is one of my major goals for the new year. I also have another project in the works, which will be launched within the next few months (stay tuned). 2016 was a year for creative exploration for me. I took a jewelry making class, starting doing weaving projects, made a dreamcatcher. It reinstated a passion for both creativity and entrepreneurism, and I look forward to meshing these two things in 2017.
One of the most important shifts I’ve made over the past couple years is growing and nurturing relationships with people who really inspire me- as entrepreneurial, ethically-driven, positive, creative, just plain awesome people. I am a firm believer that the energy of the people you surround yourself with can either bring you down or lift you up. It’s nice to have people to celebrate your small and large successes with, people to learn from and grow with. I intend to continue meeting cool people and building healthy/respectful/inspiring friendships in the new year and many more to come.
What are you resolving to improve upon in 2017?
